HELNAN Auberge Fayoum HOTEL

Originally named Crocodilopolis, then Arsinoe, Medinet El-Fayoum, often quoted as the “land of roses”, was the main place of worship of the crocodile god, Sobek. Apparently, during the  ancient time, crocodiles were adorned with gold and fed honey cakes and meat by the priests of interest are the huge wooden waterwheels.

The waters of the Bahr Yusef are distributed throughout the oasis from Medinet, the capital of the Fayoum. Approximately 200 of the great waterwheels are located throughout the oasis. The Seven Waterwheels, a Fayoum landmark, are surrounded by mangos, palms and willows. A great stone obelisk was erected in honor of Senwosret I in Abgig during the 12th Dynasty.

Located about 80 Km to the south west of Cairo, Fayoum emerges on the map as a bud blooming from the stem , Fayoum has played an important role during the different eras of the Egyptian history , traces and remains can assure these facts from different periods like “ geese of Maidum” Hawwarah pyramid from pharaonic periods “ Fayoum portraits” from Graeco – Roman and different Monasteries from the Coptic period , Fayoum is well – know for its unique “ Sawaki “ which means “ water wheels” as it has many water stream and that explains the name “ Fayoum “ which is derived from word “ vium” which means water in ancient Egyptian language.


History of Helnan Auberge Fayoum…
Since its founding in 1937, the Auberge Fayoum Hotel has been host of official banquets for the royalty, heads of state, and celebrities. The Auberge was initially built as a hunting lodge by King Farouk who mainly used it as hospitality for his hunting expeditions and parties. Due to its convenient location in the Middle East and close to Egypt’s capital, Cairo, the Auberge has in many years been a favourite retreat to many famous personalities, political figures and other prominent guests, and has witnessed several international treaties, meetings, and conventions.

Helnan Auberge has maintained the old port on Qaroun Lake, also built in 1937 by King Farouk. where activities such as fishing, boat sailing and windsurfing can be attended. The wonderful lake represents one of the most beautiful hunting areas in the Middle East. In this unspoiled Egyptian countryside visitors can enjoy themselves at the golden sandy beaches, or explore the “Valley of the Whales” which once was the bottom of the sea but today is dried out, where skeletons of shells are lying in the desert sand.

Fayoum has played an important role in the history of the Pharaonic, Coptic, Greek, Roman, and Islamic periods, where ancient monuments are found nearby the hotel.

The hotel has been an important setting to the Egyptian movie industry. Most of the elder Egyptian and Middle Eastern black and white movies were shot at the Auberge Fayoum Hotel.

After several decades the Auberge was taken over by the Scandinavian hotel chain, Helnan International Hotels with headquarter in Denmark. The chain that today owns and operates several five and four star hotels in different parts of the world, is founded by Enan Galaly who has a long career in the hotel- and tourism industry.
